As in a previous Texas bigamy case, yet another Texas DA's office can't get the current bigamy law correct; bigamy became a felony in Texas in September 2005. Read on.--OneOfSeven
A Houston man was charged with bigamy after his wife turned him over to law enforcement, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Rose Perez said she found multiple marriage licenses for her husband of two years, Francisco Perez."You don't know what to do because you don't know if you've got a husband. You don't know if that wife -- what's going on with them, and I know she's struggling to make it," Perez said.
She found out about what she called her husband's double life about a year ago.It started with strange behavior. Rose Perez said her husband would pick a fight and then disappear for days. One day, she followed him and she said she caught him with another woman.
She then waited for her husband to leave before confronting the other woman. "She told me in Spanish that's her husband. She had no clue who I am and, so, I'm like, 'Oh, my God,'" Rose Perez said. "He thought about and he made the mistake and he thought he could just pull it off and I wouldn't find out."
She said her husband finally admitted to juggling at least two wives. He said he married the other woman, who is from Venezuela, to make her a legal citizen.
Rose Perez went to the Harris County courthouse and found that her husband had two active marriage licenses. She was shocked."Especially here in Texas. You go to the courthouse and you think they could catch that. But no," Rose Perez said.
The Harris County District Attorney's Office filed a bigamy charge against Francisco Perez, which is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum $1,000 fine. However, he took a job in Venezuela shortly after his wife confronted him and is no longer in Texas."He's going to pay one way or another.
They're going to catch him sooner or later, and I'm sure there's other women out there that we don't know about," Rose Perez said. She wants her husband to agree to and pay for divorce proceedings. He denied her request until he called to say recently that he met a woman in Venezuela with whom he would like to marry.
