Kitsap County, WA prosecutors have charged a woman with felony bigamy for allegedly being married to men in Kingston and Illinois, according to documents filed in Kitsap County Superior Court.
Chunbo Shen, 39, was charged Friday and made her first court appearance Tuesday. She was arrested Sunday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport by Port of Seattle officers and booked into the Kitsap County jail Monday, according to Kitsap County Sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson.
The case began when a 76-year-old Kingston man reported a burglary at his home in late 2007. Gone were his current and expired passports, military identification, his marriage license to Shen, will, birth certificate and some family photos, sheriff's detectives said.
But deputies didn't hear more about the case until May 5, when the Kingston man told them he had learned that his wife, Shen, "had the documents all along," detectives wrote in court documents.
The Kingston man told detectives he met Shen through a Web site and the two were married in Hawaii in 2004. She would stay with the man in Kingston for short times, the 76-year-old said, before disappearing. She told him she was delivering medical lectures in China. Her husband provided her with money for travel and living expenses, detectives said.
But when he looked up the area code on the phone number she provided him, he learned it was from Illinois.
In early May, the man told detectives he had found joint tax returns from Shen and another man in Illinois on his home computer, detectives said.
Shen remains in the Kitsap County jail on $100,000 bail.
