A New York man has been charged with bigamy after he allegedly married a woman in Vermont last year before his divorce was finalized. David J. Becker, 48, of Hartsdale, N.Y., was charged with bigamy and false swearing for marrying a woman in Whitingham on Aug. 20, 2005, before his divorce in New York was complete, according to the Vermont State Police.
Becker first got married in Eastchester, N.Y., in March 1984, police said, and began divorce proceedings in 2004 after the marriage deteriorated. In August 2005, Becker allegedly filed for a marriage license in Whitingham.
The ratification of a marriage license requires both parties to take on oath that they are legally permitted to marry in Vermont, police said. Becker was arrested on May 19 and released on a citation to appear in Brattleboro District Court on June 20.
