A judge Thursday dismissed a bigamy charge filed against a Coralville man because his speedy trial right had been violated.
Ronald Lee Evans, aka Ronald Lee Robi, 55, was arrested in December 2006 for allegedly being married to two women at the same time. Online court records show prosecutors filed the trial information Jan. 22. However, Evans never waived his right to a speedy trial and the 90-day limit expired earlier this week.
Evans still faces a second-degree theft by deception charge and a parole violation for allegedly conning a pair of area businesses out of $2,233 in merchandise. He pleaded not guilty and will stand trial June 4 in Johnson County District Court.
In 2003, Evans was sentenced to 30 years in prison for conning multiple area businesses out of about $330,000 in cash and merchandise. Iowa Department of Corrections Spokesman Fred Scaletta said Evans was placed on work release in July 2004 and paroled in December 2004.
